held on 25 October 2002

AIDS Alert
Ghana in
collaboration with The Ghana AIDS Commission, The British
Council and POLICY Project organised a successful workshop on
the theme 'Destigmatising HIV/AIDS: towards the creation of an
enabling society for People Living with HIV and AIDS', in
October 2002.
The theme of
the workshop is in line
with Ghana's strategic plan towards easing the integration into
society, of people affected and infected by HIV/AIDS. On the
other hand, this conference represents one in a series of
cumulative events planned by AIDS Alert in support of the
international theme for World AIDS Day 2002 - 'Stigma and
Discrimination'
The venue
for the event was
the British Council auditorium in Accra with the target group
being a cross section of lawyers. Non-lawyers were also
represented.
The purpose
of the workshop was to
sensitise, inform and highlight the Human Rights aspect of
HIV/AIDS and to assess whether existing laws in Ghana deal
adequately with public health concerns raised by HIV/AIDS. The
workshop also discussed whether there was a need to review the
laws to deal specifically with HIV/AIDS.
