Research
and monitoring:
AIDS Alert carries out methodical studies into the root causes
& socio economic effects of HIV/AIDS. AIDS Alert conducts
researches into AIDS orphans, provisions available to them and
measures relating to the care and integration into society of
these children. Our research activities also cover care provision
available to both children and adults affected and infected by
HIV/AIDS.
We also conduct studies into ancillary
or related issues such as reproductive health, the results of
which will enable people to protect themselves and their partners
and ultimately, their unborn children from becoming infected
with HIV/AIDS.
As opposed to mainstream conventional
research, our research activities are mainly community based
- conducted by, for and with the active participation and of
neighborhoods, community groups, grassroots advocates and people
living with HIV/AIDS.
In the specific countries or regions
that we work, we monitor developments and progress in the causes,
conduct and effects of HIV/AIDS. Our activities are carried
out in consultation and where possible in collaboration with
appropriate NGOs, other AIDS agencies and the relevant Health
agencies.
Publications &
Dissemination:
AIDS Alert's activities in this area of work include the production
of useful materials on HIV/AIDS prevention and control, either
electronically through our website, email mailing lists or through
hard copy printing such as leaflets and periodicals.
Dissemination of information is primarily
through our website, linkages to other sites, newspaper articles
and other publications. Propagation is additionally done through
AIDS Alert's participation in television and radio discussion
programmes, thus ensuring continued dialogue to deepen the understanding
and promotion of public consensus on HIV/AIDS prevention and
control.
AIDS Alert occasionally publishes
findings and useful results of research and monitoring activities,
on its website and in hard copy form. Publications and event
notes, as may be necessary, produced in local languages for
easier digestion by a broader cross section of the populace.
Training
workshops, conferences and seminars:
Our training activities in the main, but not exclusively, take
the form of workshops or lectures aimed at specific target groups
with the view to educate them on HIV/AIDS preventive/control actions.
Examples of training events include:

Workshops to train
the youth and equip them with 'Peer Counselling' skills on
HIV/AIDS prevention and control, so that they can communicate
the right messages or information to their peers.

Workshops and lectures
on destigmatising HIV/AIDS, with the view to creating an enabling
society for People Living with HIV and AIDS.

Training events
for policy makers and other people in positions to make decisions
that affect people living with HIV/AIDS.

Training HIV counsellors
to equip them with skills that will enable them to give professional
and consistent advice and counselling to people affected and
infected by HIV/AIDS
AIDS Alert's conferences and seminars
are aimed at wider audiences, providing fora for discussing
and promoting dialogue to educate on the causes and socio economic
effects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The conferences and seminars
also aim to promote consensus and heighten peoples' awareness
on HIV/AIDS.
Advocacy:
Our activities in furtherance of our advocacy programme include
the representation at a global level, of the views, concerns,
plight and well being of both children and adults affected and
infected by HIV/AIDS. This is achieved through developing partnerships
and networks with governments, policy makers and other NGOs
working on HIV and AIDS and using meetings, conferences, the
media and internet as a means of further fulfilling the aims
of this programme.
As part of our work, AIDS Alert advocates
for improvements in care and other service provision to people
affected and infected by HIV/AIDS.
We monitor developments in the area
of HIV/AIDS prevention and control and pursue relevant dialogue
with decision makers to ensure that the subject HIV/AIDS stays
high on the agenda.
AIDS Alert is continuously
seeking consultative status with governments and other key players
in the field of HIV/AIDS to enable us make material contributions
or input into declarations and policies on the subject.
